Oklahoma Hall Of Fame Honors Keith Anderson

feature

Keith Anderson photo courtesy of Arista Nashville

August 9, 2006--Arista Nashville artist Keith Anderson will be honored with the Rising Star Award at this year's Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Thursday October 12, in Muskogee. Governor Frank Keating created the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame Board in 1999. This year's inductees include Leon Russell in the pop/rock category and Mel McDaniel in the country category.

"I'm so proud of the great music that continues to come out of Oklahoma," says Keith, "from Roy Clark and Toby Keith to Ronnie Dunn and Carrie Underwood. To be in their company is a great honor."

The Miami, OK, native and Oklahoma State University graduate continues to tour in support of his debut album, Three Chord Country and American Rock and Roll, a project that has spawned the Top 10 hit, "Pickin' Wildflowers" and his current No. 6 chart-topper and hit video, "Every Time I Hear Your Name."

I'm always pleasantly surprised (well, not really surprised) whenever I see yet another example of how Carrie's kind personality inspires more and more fans to greatness. Here's my buddy cu1fan's rendition of Carrie's CD insert drawn on a piece of lined tablet paper with a retractable pencil. Believe it or not, he says this is the first time he's drawn something in years!

Underwood Named NARM ''Country Breakout Artist Of The Year''

Triple-Platinum Country sensation Carrie Underwood garners yet another accolade with this week's announcement that she has been named "Country Breakout Artist of the Year" by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM).

The award was one of several honors bestowed by the not-for-profit music trade association on behalf of its retail and wholesale members in recognition of artists who have contributed significantly to the health of the industry through sales and creativity.

Carrie's debut 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville album, "Some Hearts," was RIAA certified in April for sales of 3,000,000 units, becoming the fastest Triple-Platinum female Country debut in history.

Carrie Underwood Happy Her Music Matters

August 7, 2006--Carrie Underwood tells X Radio she's proud her music is connecting with people. "I get stories every day," she says. "I get letters where somebody might have been having a lot of trouble with their life and 'Jesus, Take The Wheel' made'em feel a lot better about their life. It might have kept them from doing something that was dumb or irrational. That makes me feels great because music is such a powerful thing. It's a universal language that everybody can relate to--and if it makes people feel good, then we're doing our job right."

Review: Murphys 8/4/06

Underwood, Travis' country, gospel rocks show

MURPHYS - Country music's past and future came to life Friday night at Ironstone Amphitheatre as Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood shared the bill in the concert series' only country show.

The veteran Travis, 47, and newcomer Underwood, 23, both turned in excellent shows, performing hits songs and pulling out surprises as well.

The biggest surprise - at least to some - may have been that Underwood, the 2005 "American Idol" winner, opened the show for Travis, a country music legend who hasn't had many songs on the country charts in recent years. The show was advertised as Underwood as the main act.
Underwood's one-hour set featured her unique blend of pop-country that focused heavily on power ballads such as "Starts With Goodbye," "Lessons Learned" and "I Just Can't Live a Lie."

While many of those songs sounded the same, Underwood delivered them with emotion and an amazing vocal ability.

Never was that more evident than on the signature song of her young career, the gospel-country ballad "Jesus Take the Wheel."

The best part of Underwood's set was her acoustic performance in which she dedicated her current single "Don't Forget to Remember Me" to recent graduates as well as mothers and daughters who attended the show together. The song is about a young woman leaving home for the first time.

The Oklahoma native gave the crowd a pleasant surprise when she declared that she was going to sing a pair of Guns N Roses songs during her acoustic set.

"Everybody knows immediately after 'American Idol,' I said I'm going to sing country music, and all of the fans welcomed me with open arms," Underwood told the crowd. "I love country music, but sometimes it's nice to do something different - something outside the box."

Travis, a country traditionalist who ruled the charts during the late 1980s and is now one of country's elder statesmen, performed a steady one hour, 20 minute set of his greatest hits.

Highlights included "Forever and Ever Amen," "Digging Up Bones" and "On the Other Hand," among others.

The North Carolina native spent most of the concert focusing on his music, breaking up the performance with a few corny jokes. Because of his homespun personality and boyish grin, he was able to pull it off.

Backed by his eight-piece band, Travis also performed a gospel set, which has been a staple in his live shows for quite some time. In recent years, Travis has shifted his focus from mainstream country to recording gospel records.

Travis closed the show with the patriotic ballad "America Will Always Stand," a song he co-wrote shortly after 9/11. Toward the end of the song, a giant American flag appeared behind the stage, drawing large applause.

From Nashville Kat:

Of all the gossip magazines, I found out the most accurate one according to my Hollywood PR friend is US Weekly and in this week's issue the newly single Carrie Underwood says "guys are most sexy when they don't know they are - arrogance is NOT sexy."

08.04.2006 5:05 PM EDT

Underwood fights pop switch...

She'd spent a year as the winner of "American Idol" and was about to receive a college degree from Northeastern State University, but May was a month of dread for Carrie Underwood, who was certain her big graduation day would be a disaster. "I was like, 'People are going to boo me,' " the singer told Teen People in the magazine's September — and final — issue. Underwood, who said a story in a student newspaper claimed she was getting too much attention, got through the ceremony to receive her degree without a boo — "I was just another graduate." And while the triple-platinum country singer says she'd enjoy working in small-town broadcast journalism, a shorter career jump to a more pop sound is not in her future. "What could I bring to that market? I don't dance. I'm not a tummy show-er. ... I felt I fit in the country world, where I don't have to change." Teen People's final issue, which also features the new cast of "Laguna Beach," is on newsstands Friday (August 4).

Nashville, Tn -- Even with two number one singles, Carrie Underwood is still considered the baby of her family. Her recording of "Don't Forget to Remember Me" is personal to her whole family, not just to her. Underwood says it's "really hard" for her parents to let go, a process they're still going through.

Local stations need to tune in country

Raymond J. Keating

July 31, 2006

Country music rules! Well, except 'round these here parts.

The Country Music Association points out that country music, with more than 2,000 stations across the nation, ranks as the most popular radio format. But there's been no country radio station on Long Island for five years.

The twang drought on the radio actually has reached a decade in New York City, even though the city rates at or near the top in country album sales each year, according to the association. In fact, New York City and San Francisco are the only major media markets without country radio.

Listeners can tune in to satellite radio for their country fix. In addition, Clear Channel has launched two local HD digital country stations this year: New York Country 103.5 HD2 in the city and Long Island Country 97.5 HD2 on Long Island.

But satellite radio is a subscription service, and HD radios are quite pricey. So most of us spinning the dial on radios at home and in the car miss the country sound.

But what exactly are locals missing? Well, contemporary country ain't your granddaddy's country music. There are still lots of stories about drinking, loving, leaving, crying, fighting and pickups. But there's much more, and styles of country music range widely.

Fortunately, country stars still come our way for live performances, and a sold-out concert by Kenny Chesney, with Carrie Underwood and Dierks Bentley as openers, at Madison Square Garden earlier this month showed off the complete country package.

Underwood, an "American Idol" winner, kicked off with her pleasing pop-country sound. But her hit "Jesus, Take the Wheel" serves as a beautiful example of country music not being ashamed or afraid of touching on God. It's about faith, prayer, second chances and recognizing that "I can't do this on my own."

Carrie Underwood On Teen People Cover

July 28, 2006--Carrie Underwood graces the cover of the September issue of Teen People with the caption, "Carrie Underwood’s Rocky Love Life." X Radio reports that the article says Carrie and her boyfriend of nine months--Chad, a 21-year-old marketing student at the University of Arkansas--recently broke up. The demands of her career proved to be too much. Carrie always said she’d never date anyone in the business, but admits it was tough dating someone who wasn’t.

"I totally see why celebrities date other celebrities now," she says. Carrie also talks about how her heart got broken by a long-time college beau who she dumped because he cheated on her. Some other topics that Carrie discusses include her strict upbringing by religious parents and how she feared the "I’m disappointed in you" speech; why she became a vegetarian, (her friends raised cows to show them, then would eat them, which made Carrie feel "horribly guilty"); and how she has no desire to compete with the pop divas, noting, "I don’t dance. I’m not a tummy show-er?I felt like I fit in the country world, where I didn't have to change." Look for Carrie’s story in the final issue of Teen People that will hit newsstands August 4.

Country's "Sexy Six" Featured In Us Weekly

July 26, 2006--Country music's "Sexy Six" are featured in the latest issue of US Weekly magazine, on newsstands now, and the focus is on how their eating habits come in to play on the road. Sara Evans says she eats really healthy, which means no sweets, no fried foods. "I only eat fish and salad and basically, salad!" she says. "I drink tons of water for my voice. If I want to snack, I'll get yogurt or grapes or a granola bar. I usually just do small little meals." Sara confesses she has been known to allow a drink or two. "I love Michelob Ultra," she admits. "It's just like a loaf of bread in the form of beer."

Martina McBride shares, "My favorite snack would be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and chocolate milk or peanut butter toast. Anything with peanut butter, actually."

Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles confesses she has "a sweet tooth the size of Connecticut!" She elaborates, "If I'm going to splurge, I'm having chocolate, cheese and wine. Not necessarily in that order, but all together in some way. I'd like a soft cheese, something really stinky on a cracker, and an excellent red and the darkest chocolate I can get."

Carrie Underwood claims she has muster up the willpower to not eat junk food after her shows are over, and says it's hard "because you want to so bad!" Miranda Lambert and LeAnn Rimes are also featured in the article. LeAnn and Jennifer agree that a massage and going for a hike are among their favorite ways to relax.

"I love going to the spa. I love a massage," says Jennifer. "I love to hike. It's kind of like the 'reboot' button for me when you get out in nature."

"I am a spa connoisseur," adds LeAnn. "A massage is a good way to relax because I know no one can get a hold of me. I also love taking long walks and going hiking when it's beautiful weather outside."

As for Sara, she likes to spend downtime with friends in the backyard. "That's my absolute favorite pastime-- to have girlfriends come over, even with their husbands. We all just get together and eat and drink and be normal."

A great Carrie interview from DoSomething.org

I'm posting these again for no other reason than I like these pictures and think Carrie is kewl. LOL! Carrie jokes with the band backstage at the Sunfest festival in West Palm Beach, Florida on May 4, 2006.

Here's a great Carrie interview from DoSomething.org.

As almost everyone on the planet knows, Carrie is a huge animal lover (that
may be an understatement). Carrie does wonderful and positive things with
her increased public presence to help spread the word about worthy causes.
Enjoy the interview!

Do you have a favorite pet?

I don't think I could really choose a favorite pet. The one I've had the longest was my dog named Blondie, and she was a cocker spaniel. I think we either had her for fourteen or fifteen years, and she was a good girl.

What made her so special for you?

I grew up with her. I think I got her when I was about eight and I just had her for so long. We just hung out together; she was my best friend!

How many pets do you have now?

I have three. I have three pets; I have two dogs- or, excuse me, two cats and a dog, ha ha.

What kind?

Actually, all three of my babies were strays. I found Mason, my cat – somebody dumped him at Wal-Mart. My other cat, I found him – I worked at a veterinary clinic, and I was coming home from work. He was sitting there watching the cars go by so, that's how I got him. Molly, my dog, kind of found me and I was a foster parent for her, for the Humane Society and nobody ever claimed her, so I ended up keeping her.

How long have you had them all?

I got all of them when they were pretty young. I've had Mason for about two years. I've had Maxwell for probably about a year and a half. And then Molly I've had for about a year and a half.

Do they come on tour with you at all?

No, unfortunately! My mom and my dad love them so much that they take care of them while I'm going.

What's your favorite thing to do with your pets?

Mason, my oldest cat, is a cuddle-bug, and I think that's kind of rare for kitties, but he'll sleep with you at night and cuddle up to you and sleep under the covers. Maxi's the scaredy-cat, but he likes to cuddle sometimes, too! Molly's a smart dog, so she's fun to play with.

Why do you love animals so much?

I was kind of born this way. I've always, you know, been a lover of animals and I'd stand up for any of them and fight for them and, I don't know, I just love them. They're babies and they need people.

Why do you think it's important for teens to volunteer their time to help animals?

I think people – not just teens, but everybody – could learn so much from spending a few hours at an animal shelter or volunteering at a veterinary clinic or something like that. I mean, you learn how to take care of your animals, you get a greater respect for them, but mostly, you learn how to take care of your own by seeing the way a lot of people don't take care of theirs.

What's the most rewarding thing that you've ever done to help out an animal or a pet owner?

Other than getting my animals – they were strays – off the streets, ha ha, working at the vet clinic was a great way for me, because I did have them, I was a college student and I couldn't let them go hungry. I actually volunteered to work at the vet clinic and they just decided to hire me, so it was a way to pay my vet bills to protect them.

Last question. What would you say to someone who wants to help animals but is too young to actually work at an animal shelter?

I'd say the best way is to just take care of your own, do the best you can, you know? Make sure they always have water – especially when it's hot outside – make sure they're clean, fingernails are trimmed and teeth are clean and stuff like that. Just make sure that they're healthy and happy.

Paisley, Underwood Make Touring Team

Brad Paisley
July 25, 2006, 3:20 PM ET
Katie Hasty, N.Y.
Brad Paisley's third and final leg of his Time Well Wasted tour will be shared with Arista labelmate Carrie Underwood. The run kicks off on Sept. 22 in Birmingham, Ala., and continues through Dec. 8 in Chicago.

Paisley released "Time Well Wasted" in August 2005 and is currently supporting the effort on the road with Eric Church. The set crowned the Top Country Albums chart and entered at No. 2 on The Billboard 200. Fans can weigh in with song requests on Paisley's Web site; he promises to perform the most requested track during the acoustic portion of upcoming shows.

Underwood is on the road with Kenny Chesney through early September and will be performing at a handful of state fairs before embarking on her tour with Paisley.
